Tornado Cash Developer Faces July 2025 Trial
Roman Storm, the developer behind Tornado Cash, is set for a trial in the U.S. in July 2025. A federal judge has denied a request for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to review its records for any helpful materials for Storm’s defense.
Judge Katherine Polk failla made this decision on Friday. She ruled that the DOJ doesn’t need to review its records for additional materials that could aid Storm’s defense. This ruling is crucial as it could impact the upcoming trial.
Storm and his legal team are preparing for the trial. The judge, Katherine Polk Failla, stated that she won’t require a further review of DOJ materials. She believes there’s no additional exculpatory material. The law requires prosecutors to share all information that could help the defense. However, the DOJ confirmed the prosecution of the Ethereum mixer co-founder earlier this month.
Initially, the DOJ charged storm and another Tornado Cash founder, Roman Semenov, in August 2023. They were accused of operating the mixing service and laundering over $1 billion. However, the DOJ now focuses on “bad actors” who exploit crypto mixing services for illicit activities.
Alexey Pertsev, another Tornado Cash developer, was released by a Dutch court in February. He was arrested in Amsterdam in August 2022.
