Crypto Scam Results in Global Arrests andупить Millions Lost
A man from Wellington was caught in Auckland during an international crypto scam investigation. Authorities say the scam stole around $265 million (NZD$450 million) from seven victims.
New Zealand’s Financial Crime Group and the FBI worked together on the probe. cryptocurrency was stolen from March to August 2024 using tactics that tricked victims. The stolen money was then sent through different crypto platforms to hide its origin.
Search warrants in Auckland, Wellington, and California led to 13 arrests over three days. The Wellington man faces serious charges, including racketeering and wire fraud.
The U.S.Department of Justice claims the suspects used the stolen money for luxury spending. they bought exotic cars, expensive handbags, watches, and high-end clothing.Some evenings in nightclubs cost up to $500,000.
The man appeared in Auckland District Court and was given bail with name suppression. He must return to court on July 3.
More arrests were made in California this week, with two suspects still at large in Dubai. The scam is said to have operated from October 2023 to March 2025, amassing a collection of 28 luxury cars.
