Uganda Launches $5.5 Billion Tokenized Economy with GSN and Diacente Group
Uganda is set to revolutionize its economy with a $5.5 billion tokenized initiative. the project,a collaboration between Global Settlement Network (GSN) and Diacente Group, aims to digitize real-world assets and introduce a national Central bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
The initiative focuses on diacente Group’s Karamoja Green Industrial and Special Economic zone (GISEZ). This zone includes agro-processing hubs, mining sites, and solar plants. By tokenizing these assets, the project creates a digital economy backed by tangible infrastructure.
Uganda’s CBDC, built on GSN’s blockchain, is accessible via smartphones and USSD. It ensures secure transactions for over 40 million people. The system complies with regulatory standards like KYC and AML.
This move aligns with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. It aims to create over a million jobs and boost annual exports to $10 billion.
Edgar Agaba, Diacente Group’s Chairman, highlights the project’s broader impact.”This partnership isn’t just about infrastructure. Its about unlocking long-term value for our people and region,” he said. “By integrating tokenization and CBDCs, we’re fostering tech-driven ecosystems that attract new capital and empower local industries.”
the project is a meaningful step for Uganda, joining other nations piloting CBDCs. It aims to build a fully digital economy that supports lasting growth and regional development.
