Thailand Introduces Crypto-too-Baht System for Tourism Boost
Starting Monday, Thailand rolls out TouristDigiPay, aiming to attract more international tourists by letting them spend cryptocurrencies. This move comes as China’s visitor numbers decline, impacting Thailand’s tourism income.
To use the system, visitors must undergo strict Know Your Customer (KYC) checks. They’ll also need QR wallets from regulated firms. Thatcher Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira will unveil full details during a press event.
the process involves setting up accounts with approved digital asset companies and electronic money providers. Both sectors fall under Thai regulatory scrutiny.
There are restrictions though. Spending is capped based on merchant size, with big stores allowing up to 500,000 baht per month. Smaller vendors cap it at 50,000. High-risk merchants can’t accept such payments. Cash withdrawals are also off-limits.
A “Tourist Wallet” app helps with QR code transactions. It enables visitors from countries without mutual payment agreements with Thailand. Future wallets might include support for international debit and credit cards.
This crypto-pleasant initiative targets new tourist groups and tackles old tourism issues.Thailand becomes one of the few countries building a monitored crypto-tourism system.
