Tether Adjusts USDT Legacy Chain Support
On august 29, 2025, Tether made a crucial decision regarding USDT tokens on legacy blockchain networks.
Initially planning to freeze USDT on Omni layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand effective September 1, 2025, Tether reconsidered after receiving community feedback. Instead of freezing the assets, Tether declared these platforms “unsupported,” halting official issuance and redemption. This leaves token transfers active but strips the support and backing enjoyed by USDT on modern blockchains.
This shift highlights Tether’s strategy.By ceasing to issue or redeem USDT on smaller networks, Tether reduces its operational load, focusing resources on active, high-demand chains. This move sidesteps potential backlash, as forcing unsupported asset status on USDT rather than freezing them outright avoids a direct conflict with users and developers.
A new initiative shows where Tether’s efforts will focus: launching a native USDT via bitcoin’s RGB protocol. Unlike other wrapped assets, RGB integrates USDT deeply into Bitcoin, leveraging its inherent security. The goal is to capitalize on bitcoin’s trustworthiness without introducing extra risks.
USDT currently thrives on major platforms like Ethereum and Tron, each hosting over $80 billion in circulation.Meanwhile, Tether steadily extends support to newer networks such as Solana, Avalanche, and cosmos.
This dual approach—retreat from legacy systems while advancing onto secure foundations—marks Tether’s adaptive strategy in the dynamic world of blockchain technology.
