Metaplanet CEO ends sale speculation after 5,014 BTC move

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich said on Aug. 13 that the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company did not sell any of its holdings after moving 5,014 BTC, valued at roughly $322 million, between custodial addresses over the previous 24 hours.  Summary Metaplanet moved 5,014 BTC between custodial addresses while CEO Simon Gerovich denied any Bitcoin sale. 43,000 BTC remain in Metaplanet’s treasury after transfers, according to CEO Simon Gerovich’s latest statement. Metaplanet said moving roughly $322 million in Bitcoin cost approximately $8 in total network fees. Metaplanet remains the third largest public Bitcoin treasury behind Strategy and Twenty One Capital globally. Bitcoin traded near $63,600 today, leaving Metaplanet’s treasury below its reported average acquisition cost overall. The statement answered speculation generated by large transfers from wallets publicly associated with the company. Gerovich said, “This was a routine custody operation. No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 BTC.” He added that moving the roughly $322 million in Bitcoin cost the company approximately $8 in total network fees. We transferred 5,014 BTC between Metaplanet custodial addresses over the past 24 hours. This was a routine custody operation. No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 BTC.All of our addresses are published, which is why the transfers were observable in real time.…— Simon Gerovich (@gerovich) August 12, 2026 Metaplanet says 5,014 BTC remained under company custody The clarification resolves the main question raised by Wednesday’s onchain activity: whether the large wallet movements represented a sale. Gerovich said Metaplanet transferred the Bitcoin between its own custodial addresses. He also noted that the company publishes its addresses, which made the transfers observable in real time. As crypto.news reported before the CEO’s clarification, earlier onchain tracking captured 3,881 BTC leaving Metaplanet linked wallets. Lookonchain valued that portion of the transfers at roughly $247 million but did not establish that the Bitcoin had been sold. The CEO’s later statement raised the total moved over 24 hours to 5,014 BTC and identified the activity as an internal custody operation. Large transfers have drawn similar attention before. In March, Metaplanet moved about 4,986 BTC worth roughly $368 million after several months of wallet inactivity. Those coins were reported as moving to new wallets, without evidence at the time that Metaplanet had disposed of the assets. Metaplanet still reports a 43,000 BTC treasury Metaplanet’s official disclosures showed no Bitcoin sale notice when checked on Aug. 13. Its latest listed filing was dated Aug. 10 and concerned the record date for an extraordinary shareholder meeting. The most recent Bitcoin purchase filing remained dated July 2. The company raised its Bitcoin treasury to 43,000 BTC after purchasing another 2,823 BTC during the second quarter. It reported an overall average acquisition price of about 15.3 million yen per Bitcoin. Its official tracker continued to show 43,000 BTC following the latest transfers. The distinction between a transfer and a sale matters. Bitcoin can move between custodians, cold storage or other company controlled addresses without beneficial ownership changing. Wednesday’s movements initially showed where Bitcoin was moving onchain, but not whether Metaplanet had exchanged the coins for cash or another asset. Gerovich’s statement now directly addresses that uncertainty. Lookonchain estimated that Metaplanet was carrying roughly $1.4 billion in unrealized Bitcoin losses when BTC traded near $63,600. The estimate used an average acquisition price of about $96,191 and was not a loss figure reported by Metaplanet. Without a sale, the estimate represents a mark to market change rather than a realized loss. U.S. investors also have exposure to Metaplanet’s strategy Metaplanet is primarily listed in Tokyo but is also available to U.S. investors through OTCQX under the ticker MTPLF. Current BitcoinTreasuries data ranks it third among public company Bitcoin holders with 43,000 BTC. The two companies ahead of it are U.S. based. Strategy currently holds 840,447 BTC, while Twenty One Capital holds 43,514 BTC, according to the tracker. Metaplanet sits only 514 BTC behind Twenty One Capital but remains far behind Strategy, which continues to dominate the corporate Bitcoin treasury rankings. That comparison gives the wallet movements a broader public markets dimension. Investors increasingly track both company disclosures and blockchain addresses for large Bitcoin treasury firms. Metaplanet’s episode shows the limits of drawing conclusions from onchain movements alone when the destination remains under the same company’s control. There was no sharp negative stock reaction after the clarification. Metaplanet shares traded around 223 yen at 1:14 p.m. JST on Aug. 13, up about 0.9% for the session, according to delayed FactSet data. Bitcoin was trading near $63,616 and was little changed on the day. What happens next for Metaplanet Investors will now watch whether future regulatory disclosures change Metaplanet’s reported 43,000 BTC balance. Gerovich’s statement and the company’s Bitcoin tracker currently point in the same direction: the 5,014 BTC transfer changed custody addresses but did not reduce the treasury. Metaplanet remains well short of its longer term accumulation goals. The company previously set a target of 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026 and 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027. At the current reported balance, it would need another 57,000 BTC to reach the first target. The company has said those targets can change with market conditions. Its Bitcoin strategy is also expanding beyond simply accumulating coins. As previously reported, Metaplanet launched a ¥4 billion Bitcoin venture initiative in March to invest in financial infrastructure in Japan. It has also explored Bitcoin backed credit products and expanded into securities businesses. Those activities provide several possible uses for Bitcoin custody arrangements beyond selling assets, although Metaplanet has not connected the latest transfer to a financing product, investment or other commercial activity. The only confirmed explanation so far is Gerovich’s: the funds were moved between custodial addresses and the company continues to report 43,000 BTC.
