Uncover the Shocking $5M Bitcoin Trail of SIM Swap Criminals Now!

DOJ Seeks to Recover Stolen Bitcoin from Online Casino

The Department of Justice has launched a civil forfeiture action to reclaim $5 million in Bitcoin linked to SIM swap attacks. The case involves five victims who lost their crypto assets between October 2022 and March 2023.

how did the attackers get away with it? They used a SIM swap technique, which tricks phone companies into rerouting calls and texts to a diffrent device. Once they had access to the victims’ numbers, they could intercept verification codes needed to move funds out of their wallets.

The stolen Bitcoin was then shuffled between various wallets. Ultimately, the cocky criminals funneled everything into an account on the gambling site stake.com. In a bid to cover their tracks, they engaged in a dizzying cycle of deposits and withdrawals at the casino. This strategy, also known as money laundering, made the ill-gotten gains seem like normal buisness income.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro emphasized that such crimes won’t go unpunished. The Justice Department is working hard to trace and confiscate laundered assets. In this instance, they zeroed in on a wallet holding 117 BTC.

The case highlights the increasing sophistication of crypto theft methods. And it shows law enforcement adapting to tackle this new challenge head-on. The future looks uncertain for those who think they can hide behind complex digital schemes.
