CoinShares reports $434M crypto fund outflows after hot U.S. CPI

Global digital asset investment products have recorded $434 million in outflows so far this week as higher U.S. inflation and stronger consumer spending have raised expectations of further Federal Reserve interest rate increases. Summary CoinShares reported $434 million in digital asset investment product outflows this week amid inflation concerns. U.S. September inflation reached 3.7% annually, exceeding the 3.6% forecast and raising interest rate concerns. September retail sales climbed 0.8%, beating the expected 0.3% as gasoline prices pushed spending higher. Polymarket placed October’s Federal Reserve rate pause probability at 75%, with 25% favoring another hike. CoinShares described Bitcoin’s outlook as difficult, citing elevated inflation and uncertainty surrounding future interest rates. In its October 16 market update, CoinShares attributed the withdrawals to changing interest rate expectations following September’s consumer inflation report and retail sales figures. Annual inflation reached 3.7%, exceeding the 3.6% forecast, while retail sales grew 0.8% against expectations of 0.3%. The asset manager described Bitcoin’s current market conditions as difficult without treating the recent selling as evidence of a lasting bearish trend. Its assessment focused on higher borrowing costs, weaker demand for risk assets, and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s next decisions. The $434 million figure covers global digital asset investment products during the reporting week through October 16. CoinShares links $434M crypto outflows to U.S. inflation September’s inflation report gave traders another reason to reconsider how long U.S. interest rates might remain elevated. Consumer prices rose 0.6% from August, pushing the annual inflation rate from 3.4% to 3.7%. Data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on October 14 showed gasoline prices climbing 9.1% during September. The increase accounted for more than half of the monthly rise in the headline Consumer Price Index. Across the energy category, prices rose 5.2% from August. Shelter costs climbed 0.4%, while food prices remained unchanged for the month. The report recorded annual energy inflation of 20.4%. Excluding food and energy, core consumer prices increased 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually. The annual reading was higher than August’s 2.4%, showing that price pressures were not limited to gasoline. CoinShares interpreted the figures as a reason for the Federal Reserve to maintain a restrictive monetary policy. The firm argued that higher expected interest rates increase the returns available on interest-bearing assets, making investments such as Bitcoin less attractive to some investors. The change in sentiment appeared in cryptocurrency prices shortly after the inflation release. As crypto.news previously reported, Bitcoin’s decline below $82,000 followed the October 14 CPI announcement. Bitcoin traded near $81,900 during that session after falling from a daily high above $84,100. The report identified $79,664 as a nearby technical support level based on the Supertrend indicator. Retail sales beat forecasts but fuel costs drive spending Consumer spending provided another reason for caution over interest rates. The U.S. Census Bureau reported on October 15 that retail and food services sales reached $745 billion in September, up 0.8% from August. Economists surveyed ahead of the release had expected growth of approximately 0.3%, according to the CoinShares report. The Census Bureau revised August’s monthly increase to 1.3%, from an earlier estimate of 1.1%. Compared with September 2025, retail and food services sales grew 6.3%. Sales during the July–September quarter were 5.5% higher than in the corresponding period a year earlier. The headline spending figure did not tell the entire story. Gasoline station sales climbed 6.4% during September, according to the data cited by CoinShares, as consumers faced higher fuel prices. Once gasoline sales were excluded, monthly retail sales growth slowed to 0.2%. The corresponding August figure was 1.0%, leaving spending outside gasoline much weaker than the headline September number suggested. The Census Bureau’s advance retail sales figures are not adjusted for inflation. Consequently, the 0.8% increase includes changes in prices paid by consumers and cannot be treated as an equivalent increase in the quantity of goods purchased. CoinShares warned that continued pressure from energy costs could reduce households’ ability to spend on other products later in the year. Its assessment remains conditional on future inflation and consumption figures. The figures arrived alongside Bitcoin’s October 15 decline, when another inflation report showed U.S. producer prices rising 1.3% monthly and 6.3% annually. Bitcoin was trading near $81,500 during that report, down approximately 3.6% over the preceding 24 hours. September’s wholesale price reading was the largest monthly increase since March 2022. Federal Reserve rate expectations turn more hawkish Following the inflation and spending releases, investors reduced expectations that the Federal Reserve would keep interest rates unchanged through the rest of 2026. CoinShares cited prediction market figures showing that traders still favored no change at the October policy meeting. On October 15, Polymarket assigned approximately a 75% probability to unchanged rates and a 25% probability to a quarter-point increase. The figures were a snapshot of prediction market positions, not the Federal Reserve’s own forecast or a guarantee of the meeting’s outcome. CoinShares said futures pricing had become more favorable to additional tightening before the end of the year. The distinction between the October and later policy meetings remained central to its assessment. According to the firm, markets were increasingly considering a subsequent increase even while expecting the next meeting to end without a change. In September, the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a target range of 3.75%–4.00%. Comments from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams on October 13 provided further context. As examined in Bitcoin’s outlook ahead of inflation, Williams suggested that another rate increase could be appropriate before the end of 2026. He did not identify an immediate need for further increases during 2027, according to that account. His remarks were an individual policymaker’s assessment, not an official decision by the Federal Open Market Committee. The October interest rate decision remains pending. Bitcoin investors face further U.S. economic data CoinShares expects upcoming economic releases to influence cryptocurrency prices through changes in interest rate expectations. The firm identified cooling inflation or weaker economic activity as potential developments that could reduce pressure for further monetary tightening. Its research described the expected trading environment as a “data-driven range rather than a trend.” The assessment represents the firm’s investment outlook and does not establish where Bitcoin will trade during the coming weeks. Earlier in October, market analysts had identified Bitcoin’s $82,000 support as an important price area while traders prepared for U.S. inflation and employment releases. ViaBTC chief analyst Jeff Ko and Bitget Wallet research lead Lacie Zhang linked their October scenarios to institutional demand, Treasury yields, and the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions. The remaining October economic calendar includes the first estimate of third-quarter U.S. gross domestic product and the September Personal Consumption Expenditures report, both scheduled for October 29 according to the earlier market analysis. The Census Bureau has separately scheduled its advance October retail sales report for November 17. The September retail figures released on October 15 are preliminary estimates and may be revised as additional responses become available.
