Coinbase opens regulated route to Deribit markets for US institutions

Coinbase has completed its Deribit integration following an Oct. 1 account migration, establishing a regulated route for eligible US institutions into derivatives markets that the company says account for roughly 80% of global crypto trading volume. Summary US institutions will access Deribit options and perpetual futures through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets. Oct. 1 migration transferred Coinbase International Exchange accounts, balances, and positions to Deribit. Options through Coinbase Prime are expected in the coming weeks, with US retail access planned later. CFTC staff relief granted in May supports access to specified offshore derivatives under defined conditions. Coinbase announced on Oct. 7 that it had combined its international derivatives business with Deribit, with eligible American institutions set to reach the exchange’s options and perpetual futures through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets. According to the announcement, the structure gives US institutions a domestic, regulated intermediary for markets they previously accessed through offshore entities and separate trading systems. Coinbase Financial Markets, the company’s futures commission merchant, operates under Commodity Futures Trading Commission oversight. For institutional options trading, the company expects access through Coinbase Prime to become available in the coming weeks. Its announcement also sets out a staged retail rollout, beginning with eligible customers outside the United States before American retail access later this year. Coinbase Prime will provide institutional access to Deribit options Under Coinbase’s planned setup, eligible US institutions will use their existing Prime relationship to reach Deribit options through Coinbase Financial Markets, rather than completing separate onboarding with the foreign exchange. In its customer guidance, the company says eligible US-based Prime clients can begin onboarding now, with options on Bitcoin, Ethereum and other assets available when trading access goes live. Coinbase directs clients to their account managers for eligibility checks, onboarding requirements and timing. For Prime customers, the guidance says existing spot trading and account relationships remain in place. The company also states that US institutional options access follows a separate timetable from the completed International Exchange migration. While preparing institutional access, Coinbase says it will introduce options to eligible non-US retail customers in the coming weeks. American retail customers are scheduled for a later phase during 2026, according to the Oct. 7 announcement. The company puts derivatives at roughly 80% of worldwide crypto trading volume and says US customers have historically lacked a regulated route to much of the options and perpetual futures activity conducted overseas. CFTC staff relief established the US regulatory route in May As crypto.news previously reported, Coinbase announced its US institutional derivatives access on May 29, following CFTC staff action involving contracts listed on Deribit FZE, its affiliated foreign trading venue. According to that report, CFTC staff said certain crypto perpetual contracts described in Coinbase’s request could qualify as foreign futures under Commission Regulation 30.1. Staff also issued a conditional no-action position covering certain transfers of customer-owned digital commodities and payment stablecoins to a foreign broker affiliate for margin. At the time, Coinbase said institutions could begin onboarding through Coinbase Financial Markets, with Deribit options forming the first phase and additional derivatives products expected afterward. The company’s May announcement described potential uses including hedging, volatility trading and Bitcoin-linked basis strategies. Coinbase also said American institutions had previously lacked a regulated route into overseas derivatives markets handling trillions of dollars in annual activity. Before the current integration, Coinbase had already completed its $2.9 billion acquisition of Deribit in August 2025, according to the May report. The same coverage cited company figures showing that Deribit handled more than $185 billion in July 2025 trading volume and held about $60 billion in open interest around the acquisition’s closing. Oct. 1 migration moved accounts and recreated positions For Coinbase International Exchange institutions, the company’s migration guidance records the transfer of accounts, balances and positions to Deribit on Oct. 1. According to the guidance, the process canceled open perpetual futures orders, settled positions at the mark price, and transferred the resulting balances. Coinbase then recreated positions at the same settlement price through matched migration trades, with the transition taking about 60 minutes. On the technical side, Coinbase instructed institutional clients to replace their International Exchange trading connections with the combined platform’s endpoints. Its guidance says historical International Exchange records remain accessible for a limited period, although that trading history does not appear on the combined platform. For customers trading perpetuals through Coinbase’s app or website, the company says the transfer occurred automatically, with positions settled and recreated during the process. Coinbase said it charged no trading or settlement fees for that transition. September registrations added clearing and stock futures infrastructure Separately, Coinbase secured USDC clearinghouse registration on Sep. 28, according to coverage published Sep. 29. The CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing LLC to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. In that announcement, Coinbase said the clearinghouse would use USDC collateral and support settlement around the clock. The company described the approval as completing its “end-to-end derivatives infrastructure,” alongside its regulated exchange and futures brokerage. According to the registration coverage, Coinbase Clearing’s permission covers fully collateralized products. Coinbase said external clearing partners would continue supporting its margined derivatives business and planned US single-stock perpetual contracts. Earlier, Sep. 3 coverage detailed Coinbase’s single-stock perpetual filings, with two SEC notices dated Sep. 1 covering its exchange and brokerage entities. In the accompanying announcement, Coinbase said, “We’re working to bring single stock perps to the US.” According to the filing report, Coinbase Derivatives submitted Form 1-N for security futures exchange registration, while Coinbase Financial Markets filed Form BD-N for limited-purpose security futures broker-dealer registration. The documents did not specify a launch date, supported stocks, or proposed leverage limits.
