Belarus and Russia Collaborate on Digital Currency Plans
Belarus is gearing up to introduce its central bank digital currency (CBDC) by late 2026. National Bank chief Roman golovchenko, as reported by Belta, highlighted the digital ruble as a top priority. The focus is on ensuring the security of funds, which Golovchenko refers to as the “coloring” of funds. This means the state must be able to track digital money’s movement throughout the system.
Three main tasks lie ahead for the National Bank. They need to design the digital ruble platform, develop domestic software to operate it, and establish the rules for its use and oversight.Businesses are expected to start using the digital ruble in 2026, with government agencies and individuals following in 2027.
Golovchenko sees great potential for cbdcs in cross-border transactions. Belarus is working closely with Russia, which is also developing its own digital ruble. In April, crypto.news reported that the Bank of Russia delayed its CBDC rollout to mid-2026 due to technical challenges.
Both countries are committed to integrating their digital currencies. This collaboration aims to enhance financial efficiency and security in the region.
