bprotocol Foundation and LocalCoin Take Legal Action Against Uniswap Over Alleged Patent Infringement
On May 20, 2025, Bprotocol Foundation and LocalCoin, the teams behind Bancor Protocol and BNT token, filed a lawsuit against Uniswap Labs and the Uniswap Foundation. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
the lawsuit accuses Uniswap of using Bancor’s patented technology without permission. This technology is central to decentralized trading and smart contracts.Uniswap, a major player in the crypto market, is alleged to have infringed on the constant product automated market maker (CPAMM) technology. CPAMM is key to Uniswap’s protocol and powers its trading platform.
Bancor believes Uniswap has been using its invention as 2018 without permission.In the press release, Bancor stated, “We must act when others use our inventions to compete with us.”
Bancor patented its decentralized trading technology in 2017. It claims full rights to the invention and accuses Uniswap of unauthorized use. despite this dispute, Uniswap continues to grow. Recently, it surpassed $3 trillion in cumulative swap volume. the Uniswap TVL now stands at over $4.8 billion.
the lawsuit aims to protect Bancor’s intellectual property. It highlights the growing legal challenges in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space as innovators seek to defend their unique contributions.
