AI Powers New ransomware Tactics, TRM Labs Reports
TRM Labs, a blockchain analytics firm, has uncovered nine new ransomware groups using AI to enhance their scams. These groups, including Arkana Security and Dire Wolf, are leveraging AI to expand their operations.
AI is revolutionizing how these cybercriminals work. It allows them to scale up attacks and develop new strategies. Ari Redbord, Global Head of Policy at TRM Labs, explains, “AI is reshaping the ransomware landscape. It’s not just about bigger attacks; it’s about changing the game entirely.”
AI helps these groups automate social engineering attacks. Previously, such scams were time-consuming and required extensive readiness. Now, AI can write convincing messages and create deepfake videos. This makes it easier for attackers to trick victims.
Large language models (llms) are also used to automate code generation. This lowers the entry barrier for attackers. Additionally, AI enables the creation of polymorphic malware. This type of malware changes with each infection, making it harder to detect.
Redbord notes, “We’re seeing faster operations and more sophisticated tactics. Some groups even use regulatory and reputational pressure rather of encryption.”
AI is blurring the lines between financially motivated groups and state-linked actors. The technology allows for the creation of polymorphic malware, which alters with each infection. This makes detection much more challenging.
TRM Labs’ report highlights the growing threat of AI in ransomware. It underscores the need for better cybersecurity measures.
