Czech Politics Rattled by $45 Million Bitcoin Donation
A massive Bitcoin donation is causing a stir in Czech politics.
On June 12, the opposition demanded a no-confidence vote against the government. The reason? A controversial donation of 468 bitcoins, valued at $45 million, from Tomáš Jiříkovský, a former dark web operator. Jiříkovský, convicted in 2017 for drug trafficking and fraud, made the donation to the Justice Ministry.The funds were accepted by Minister Pavel Blazek and later converted to fiat currency. Though, Blazek resigned on May 31 due to mounting pressure.
The opposition claims the government accepted the donation without proper anti-money laundering (AML) or know-your-customer (KYC) checks. This raised questions about the legitimacy of the funds. Without these checks, it’s unclear if the bitcoins were linked to illegal activities.
Jiříkovský, the donor, was convicted in 2017 for drug trafficking and illegal weapons possession. His operations were similar to the Silk Road, a dark web marketplace founded by Ross Ulbricht. Ulbricht was pardoned in 2025 after serving 11 years in jail. In June, he also received a 300 Bitcoin donation from a dubious source.
The donation to the Justice Ministry was accepted by Minister Pavel Blazek, who resigned on May 31. The opposition argues that the government failed to verify the funds’ origin, possibly compromising the integrity of the donation. This mirrors the silk Road scandal,where Bitcoin was used for illegal drug trafficking. The Czech government,known for its crypto-kind stance on MiCA regulations could now be at risk.
