Crypto points programs face backlash over unclear rewards

Crypto points programs are facing fresh criticism as users question whether the prospect of future rewards still justifies the time, fees, and capital they commit to projects. Summary Nairolf says opaque rewards and delayed payouts have weakened trust in crypto points programs. Critics argue teams benefit from user activity while retaining control over eventual rewards. KAST reportedly plans to stop points earning Nov. 30 and introduce nontradable replacement units. Proposed changes include issuing tokens immediately, with supply, distribution and transferability conditions disclosed upfront. Pseudonymous crypto commentator Nairolf sparked the discussion in Nov. 2 posts arguing that points remain useful for attracting early users, building communities and rewarding loyalty. The problem, he said, is that those benefits depend on participants believing their contributions will eventually receive fair rewards. im sad points programs got abused so muchthey genuinely solve some of the hardest problems for early products: getting people to try something new, bootstrapping a community, rewarding early users, building loyaltyproblem is the model only works as intended if people believe…— nairolf (@0xNairolf) November 2, 2026 Years of projects extracting activity from users have damaged that belief, according to his posts. He argued that teams abusing points today are making the same growth tool less effective for other projects tomorrow. His comments drew sharper responses from other accounts. Coop described points programs as an “anti signal” and said projects abandoning their points commitments had made participation unappealing. Minion questioned whether users could reasonably expect programs to operate in good faith. it’s over for points programs for now.it’s anti signal.can’t believe how many projects are just outright rugging their points.completely unappealing to users now. https://t.co/nwWcLwuLzd— Coop⏱️ (@coopernicus01) November 2, 2026 Points programs leave users guessing about rewards Nairolf identified transparency as the first major weakness. When points have no known value, participants can keep imagining a larger eventual payout, helping projects attract attention without defining what they will deliver. how i think points programs will evolvethe two biggest problems imo:(i) transparencyuncertainty is an incredible growth mechanism. as long as points have no known value, people can keep imagining the upside but it also creates unrealistic expectations and makes… https://t.co/iPAAVWrLV1— nairolf (@0xNairolf) November 2, 2026 That uncertainty supports growth, he argued, but creates expectations that can become difficult to meet. Users may accumulate balances without knowing the eventual token allocation, conversion rate, or timing of distribution. Earlier research documented similar concerns. Galaxy researcher Christine Kim’s July 2024 report described programs that awarded points before explaining how, when, or for what rewards they could be redeemed. It identified opacity as a central drawback of the model. Galaxy distinguished points from tokens recorded on blockchains. In the programs it examined, issuers generally controlled the accounting and determined how balances could be used. A visible score therefore did not necessarily establish a claim to transferable assets. The report noted that issuing points had historically provided no guarantee of conversion into tokens, or of any particular conversion rate. That distinction helps explain why a growing balance can leave participants uncertain about what they have actually earned. Teams and farmers want different outcomes Nairolf’s second criticism concerned incentives. Before a token launch, users can generate trading volume, pay fees, deposit capital, and promote a product while pursuing an anticipated distribution. Teams benefit from that activity immediately. Participants receive points whose eventual reward remains unsettled. In his assessment, this gives teams a reason to extend the period before a token launch, while users want the reward to arrive. Launching a token introduces a new set of expectations that developers may prefer to postpone. “The longer you delay, the higher expectations get and the more trust you destroy,” he wrote. Crypto.com’s June 2024 research described the same imbalance: projects retain control over points utility and airdrop timing, while users have limited influence over the eventual distribution. Its researchers warned that disappointing rewards could trigger community backlash. The report argued that attracting users through points does not establish lasting demand. Projects still need products that give participants a reason to remain after the incentive ends. KAST illustrates how the expected reward can change KAST’s planned transition offers a current example of rewards moving away from the familiar points-to-token route. According to reports from DeFi Prime and TokenPost, the payments app will end points earning Nov. 30 and convert eligible balances into KAST Pioneer Units in early December. The reports describe the units as nontradable contractual rights without ownership, voting rights, or guaranteed cash value. Some users will receive spending vouchers instead. TokenPost reported that U.S. users fall under a separate program with its own eligibility requirements and timing. The standard December conversion window does not establish a conversion date for those accounts. Day-one tokens would define the reward earlier Nairolf proposed launching tokens from day one, potentially making them nontransferable initially. Under his proposal, projects would disclose supply, distribution, how value reaches holders, and the product milestones required for transferability before users begin accumulating rewards. He argued that this would preserve incentives for early participation while removing teams’ ability to postpone an undefined reward indefinitely. His proposal still leaves room for speculation about future value. The change is that users would know what they are accumulating and which conditions govern its use. Nairolf’s stated aim is to retain points programs’ community-building benefits while replacing an open-ended promise with terms established at the start.
