Bitcoin whitepaper turns 18 amid renewed custody debate

Bitcoin’s whitepaper turned 18 on Oct. 31, bringing fresh attention to Satoshi Nakamoto’s proposal for payments without trusted intermediaries days after Binance reported a $6.3 billion theft. Summary Satoshi published the Bitcoin whitepaper on Oct. 31, 2008, through the cryptography mailing list. The nine-page document proposed preventing double-spending without relying on a bank or central mint. Binance has pledged to cover losses after attackers drained billions from its cryptocurrency wallets. Self-custody advocates and US investor guidance describe different responsibilities for safeguarding private keys. Satoshi Nakamoto’s original announcement, preserved in the mailing-list archive, described an electronic cash system that would let people transact directly without a trusted third party. Posted at 2:10 p.m. EDT on Oct. 31, 2008, the email linked to the paper titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.” Eighteen years later, anniversary posts have returned to that opening promise while the industry deals with another major exchange breach. Bitcoin Archive shared an image of the original email alongside the message, “18 years of Bitcoin.” Another anniversary post from Lucky celebrated permissionless participation and verification, describing Bitcoin as a global financial movement. 18 Years of Bitcoin. 18 Years of Challenging the System. On October 31, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto introduced an idea that would change the world of finance forever.A simple whitepaper. A recipient needed a way to establish that the sender had not already spent the same funds elsewhere, without asking a central company to check every payment. Satoshi proposed publicly broadcasting transactions and using proof-of-work to establish their order. Participants would accept valid transactions and build on the chain with the greatest accumulated work. Changing an older payment would require repeating the work securing it and catching up with the honest network. The proposal included rewards for participants securing the system, with newly issued coins and transaction fees providing incentives. Its security model depended on honest participants collectively controlling more computing power than cooperating attackers. Privacy had limits within that public record. In its privacy section, the paper suggested keeping public keys separate from real identities and using fresh key pairs. It acknowledged that transaction links could expose other payments belonging to the same owner. The 2008 banking crisis formed the backdrop The paper appeared during a financial crisis that had already brought down major institutions and prompted extraordinary government intervention. According to the Federal Reserve’s history, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 15, 2008. The following day, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York provided support to insurer AIG. Earlier that year, the New York Fed had helped finance JPMorgan Chase’s acquisition of Bear Stearns. Satoshi’s introduction focused specifically on the costs and weaknesses of relying on financial institutions to process internet payments. It discussed transaction reversals, dispute mediation, fraud, and the difficulty of making small payments economically practical. The document offered a payment mechanism based on cryptographic verification. It did not set out a plan for regulating exchanges or guaranteeing customer deposits held by cryptocurrency businesses. Binance’s breach puts exchange custody in focus As crypto.news previously reported, Binance estimated that its Oct. 29 wallet breach affected $6.3 billion in assets. The exchange pledged to cover losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users and company resources. In its Oct. 30 update, Binance said it had set aside more than $6.34 billion, including over $5 billion already held in corresponding token assets. The company said it was purchasing the remainder through market and over-the-counter channels. Binance described unauthorized withdrawals from its hot wallet and an investigation into multiple intrusion points. It said investigators had found no evidence that wallet private keys were compromised. Custody concerns predated the breach. In an Oct. 22 letter, Casa chief security officer Jameson Lopp defended Bitcoin self-custody after recent wallet incidents. He argued that moving into ETFs or managed custody left investors dependent on institutions safeguarding their holdings. Casa sells assisted self-custody services. US guidance explains who controls the keys The SEC’s investor education office described the responsibilities of each custody arrangement in a December 2025 bulletin. With self-custody, investors manage their own private keys and bear responsibility for protecting access. Losing keys or suffering a wallet compromise can permanently prevent access to their assets. Third-party custody places control of the keys with an exchange or another provider. The bulletin warns that customers may lose access if that provider is hacked, closes, or enters bankruptcy. Its checklist asks investors whether custodians carry insurance, combine customer holdings, lend deposited assets, or subcontract storage. It recommends examining insurance terms and asking who can access the keys.
