The billion-Dollar Bitcoin Hunt: A New docuseries Unveiled
A hard drive, a landfill, and a fortune in Bitcoin are the ingredients for a new docuseries. Entertainment firm LEBUL has secured the rights to tell the story of James Howells, a British engineer who lost access to 8,000 BTC in 2013.
LEBUL’s project, titled ‘The Buried Bitcoin: The Real-Life Treasure Hunt of James Howells,’ will include a docuseries, podcast, and social media campaign. The story revolves around Howells’ quest to recover the drive, now worth over $800 million, from a landfill in Newport, Wales.
Howells, an early Bitcoin miner, claims his partner accidentally threw the hard drive away in 2013. He has since battled the Newport City Council in court, seeking permission to dig up the site. Despite offering to share the recovered funds, the courts have ruled against him due to environmental and property law concerns.
Howells lost a meaningful legal battle in Cardiff High Court in early 2025. the council plans to close the landfill and convert part of it into a solar farm. Undeterred, Howells may appeal to the Supreme Court or even buy the entire landfill.
LEBUL’s adaptation will mix real-time environmental conflict, blockchain lore, and personal obsession. The company says global streaming platforms and crypto sponsors are interested in the project. Howells’ story, a modern treasure hunt, will now reach a wider audience as LEBUL turns forgotten e-waste into entertainment gold.
